When you fall in love with a fandom, you expect to read the book, and if you are lucky you will one day get to watch what you fell for come across the silver screen. I can tell you when my heart fell for Ethan Wate. I was lying in bed with strep throat, when my friend walked a book into me. I couldn’t sleep anymore, so I opened it up and started to read. Who would have known that day would end up changing my life?
I waited and waited, sometimes thinking that seeing Ethan and Lena on the big screen would never come. Hearing about what seemed like a million other fandoms start filming and all I knew was I wanted this one. So when the announcement came for Viola Davis to play Amma, I may have jumped out of my chair, and ran across my house, just because I was excited.
I knew that there was CasterGirls.com, but I knew that I wanted to start a site to show my love for the books. Starting this site, I didn’t expect anything. I just knew that I wanted to have a place where people who loved the books as much as I did, could read about what was going on.
So imagine my surprise, when one day I see an email pop up on my phone, and it’s from Warner Brothers. I may have reenacted the run across my house with excitement.
“We’d like to invite you to visit the set of Beautiful Creatures…”
I am not going to lie, I cried.
Time seemed to slow down as I waited for the day to go to New Orleans. It was like a kid waiting for Christmas. I knew what I was getting, so I thought. I didn’t even come close to being prepared for what was about to happen.
I can close my eyes and see it, just like it was yesterday. Thinking about it that sense of excitement fills me up, and I get nervous. Though it will be awhile before I can tell you exactly what happened, I can tell you one short story.
Elena, from CasterGirls.com, was with me on the trip. We were brought into a sound stage, where silence echoed. There was no air conditioning while the camera was rolling. We were brought to sit in video village (a place where everyone goes to watch what they are filming). You could see the set, and I am telling you, that is an amazing story in itself.
Dave, the set publicist, gave us headsets so that we could hear what the actors were saying as they filmed. Elena and I looked at each other, smiling like kids in a candy store. Silence filled the room, and we turned up the volume on our headsets.
“Lena,” we heard ring into our ears. We both looked at each other, looked at the screen, and then looked at each other again.
“Oh My God,” we both said at the same time, “That. Is. Ethan.”
What happened next? Well, though I would love to tell you, I can’t. I can say that what happened to Elena and I, will live with us forever. What Alcon and Warner Bros. did for us, the way that they treated us, the way the cast welcomed us, I don’t know if I will ever be able to convey properly.
The trip to the Beautiful Creatures set was one of the best days of my life. I can’t wait to share it all with you!
